Moving On A Budget: 7 Ways To Save Money On Your Move

Congratulations on closing on your new home!

Now it's time to get all of your belongings from your old house into the new house and start the search for a local moving company to help you complete the journey.

Moving can be an expensive proposition, especially if you hire a moving company. If you plan on using a moving company, local movers are often less expensive, especially when you do a lot of the work yourself. These moving tips will help you save money on moving services.

Here are 7 moving tips for moving on a budget:

1. Sell the Excess

Moving on a budget is easier to do when you combine local movers' services with doing a lot of the work yourself. When you are ready to start packing, go through everything you have. If you have items that you no longer use, clothing that no longer fits, or items that you no longer want, sell those items.

If you plan on getting new furniture, sell your old furniture instead of taking it with you. The money you make from selling the excess can help in other ways.

2. Have a Garage Sale

You can sell the excess at a garage sale or any of the online sales pages such as Marketplace, Craigslist or GoLSN. Start out with the garage sale since people come to you. You might sell everything in one weekend. If not, you can place the items that did not sell on an online marketplace.

3. Donate Old or Unwanted Items

A week before you move, donate old and unwanted items that did not sell. You can give them to a church that helps others, give the items to those in the community who need the items, or take them to a store that accepts donations.

4. Pack and Move Valuables Yourself

You can save money by packing your valuables and moving them yourself. While our movers are very careful with your things, you’ll know where they are, and you’ll have some peace of mind knowing that your valuables are safe with you.

5. Be Prepared for the Movers

Be ready for the movers. Make sure everything is easy to get to, and you don’t have boxes that you are moving yourself in the way of the movers. Also, make sure everything you want the movers to take is already packed.

They are more efficient when you have everything ready for them.

6. Collect Boxes Before Deciding to Move

You can save money by saving boxes you get from online orders and having friends save their boxes for you. Make sure you pick up plenty of packing tape.

You’ll want to make sure the boxes are secure, especially those with fragile items.

7. Pack Boxes Yourself

Packing boxes yourself saves you a lot of time and money since you can start earlier. Pack items you use but that aren’t necessary between now and the time you move.

You can take your time packing those items since your move is 30 to 60 days out.

Next, work on items that you need, but can do without, such as dishes. Keep a few pots and kitchen utensils out and use paper plates until you move. Finally, a week before the movers arrive, start packing everything else.
